The Evolving Role of the Space Force in Modern Military Operations

Space Force guardians have increasingly demonstrated their relevance in high-profile U.S. military operations, particularly in Iran and Venezuela. Recent engagements, including Operation Midnight Hammer and Operation Absolute Resolve, have highlighted the pivotal role of space operations in supporting and enhancing ground and aerial missions. As Lt. Gen. Gregory Gagnon, commander of the Space Force’s Combat Forces Command, pointed out, these operations emphasize the “invisible front line” of outer space, showcasing the growing importance of space capabilities in modern conflict.

Operation Midnight Hammer, executed in June 2025, and Operation Absolute Resolve, conducted in January 2026, serve as case studies for the Space Force’s operational integration. Both operations utilized over 100 aircraft and multiple weapon systems, reinforcing the Pentagon’s strategy of projecting military power globally. These initiatives were underpinned by cutting-edge space support, which allowed U.S. forces to operate with enhanced situational awareness and communication among various theaters of operation.

The Role of the Combat Forces Command

The Combat Forces Command, a critical branch of the Space Force, focuses on delivering space-based capabilities to combat commands, primarily U.S. Space Command. Guardians provide essential functionalities, such as ensuring robust communication links, enhancing missile warning systems, and delivering accurate positioning, timing, and navigation (PNT) data. This operational synergy illustrates how space-based systems form the backbone of modern military success, a dependency that is only increasing.

Ground Operations Supported by Space Capabilities

During the raids in Venezuela to capture former President Nicolás Maduro, the Space Force played a crucial role by supplying satellite communications and geolocation data from Schriever Space Force Base in Colorado. The guardians’ ability to manage the electromagnetic spectrum while preventing interference enabled troops to execute their missions effectively. Likewise, during the Iranian operations, guardians were key in detecting enemy missile launches, reacting within seconds to threats aimed at U.S. forces in the Middle East, showcasing the strategic advantage afforded by space operations.

Lessons Learned from Recent Conflicts

Both Operation Midnight Hammer and Operation Absolute Resolve underscore a vital takeaway: advanced space systems and skilled personnel are essential for successful joint military operations. These experiences reflect a broader initiative by Space Force leaders to highlight the service’s strategic significance since its establishment in 2019. The lesson is clear: without effective space operations, the projection of military power becomes increasingly challenging.

Recognizing Challenges Ahead

Looking forward, Gen. Gagnon stresses the importance of recognizing that future conflicts may involve adversaries with robust space capabilities. Notably, China has been rapidly expanding its space capabilities, posing a direct challenge to U.S. superiority. Gagnon articulates a concern that a reliance on past successes may lead to complacency, especially as future engagements could see U.S. forces facing near-peer adversaries in space.

Advancing Space Warfare Capabilities

As the Space Force prepares for these potential future conflicts, it is focused on significantly upgrading its sensors and systems for monitoring space activity. Initiatives like the Geosynchronous Space Situational Awareness Program (GSSAP) are crucial for expanding the capability to track objects in orbit. The recent deployment of new research-and-development payloads will allow space operators to refine their orbital warfare tactics and techniques, marking an evolution from traditional methods to more agile and precise operations.

A Need for Growth and Resources

To effectively address future challenges, U.S. Space Force leaders have indicated a pressing need for an increase in personnel and resources. Although current recruitment efforts have surpassed goals, experts anticipate that troop numbers must double to adequately meet operational demands. Gagnon emphasizes, “We want America to know that we are ready to deliver the high ground if tasked and asked by our chain of command.” However, achieving this readiness depends on sufficient funding and recruitment of skilled guardians.

Enhancing Sensor Capabilities on Earth

In addition to improving space-based systems, the Space Force is also working to enhance ground-based sensor capabilities. This includes modernizing the Ground-Based Optical Sensor System (GBOSS) telescopes and developing new systems like the Deep-space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC). Such upgrades are essential for tracking smaller objects in orbit and ensuring robust monitoring of critical assets.
