Kiwi-Made Drones to Strengthen New Zealand’s Defence Capability

Introduction of Innovative Technology

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) is set to trial Kiwi-made drones, a move announced by Defence Minister Judith Collins. This initiative aims not only to bolster national security but also to foster local industry growth. By partnering with New Zealand companies, the NZDF is investing in homegrown technology to ensure the protection of its citizens now and in the future.

Collaboration with Local Businesses

Minister Collins emphasized the importance of collaboration with New Zealand businesses, stating, “We’re partnering with New Zealand businesses to ensure the Defence Force can protect our people into the future.” This approach demonstrates a commitment to enhancing national defense capabilities while simultaneously stimulating the local economy.

Advanced Uncrewed Systems from Syos Aerospace

At the heart of this initiative is a partnership with Syos Aerospace, a Mount Maunganui-based company recognized for its innovative uncrewed systems. Syos recently received the NZ Hi-Tech Company of the Year award in 2025, showcasing its reputation as a leader in this field. Notably, Syos drones have already been operational in conflict zones such as Ukraine, displaying their reliability and effectiveness in real-world applications.

Comprehensive Support through Sysdoc and Hirtenberger

In addition to Syos Aerospace, the NZDF is teaming up with Sysdoc, a New Zealand consulting firm specializing in digital training solutions. Sysdoc will design tailored learning materials for the NZDF, ensuring that personnel are well-equipped to operate the new drone systems effectively.

Furthermore, the NZDF will collaborate with Hirtenberger Defence Technology (HDT) Ltd, known for its advanced fire control systems. The integration of the new drones with Hirtenberger’s Arcfire—a sophisticated fire control system—will enhance operational coordination and effectiveness on the battlefield.

Upcoming Drone Deliveries

Over the coming months, several advanced drone models will be delivered to the NZDF. These include:

  • SG400 Uncrewed Ground Vehicle
  • SM300 Uncrewed Surface Vessel
  • SA2 ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) Drone
  • SA7 One-Way Effector Drone

These diverse platforms will allow the Army and Navy to conduct trials in various scenarios, such as transporting supplies, maritime patrols, and route reconnaissance missions.

Strategic Alignment with Defence Industry Strategy

This initiative aligns seamlessly with the previously announced Defence Industry Strategy, which outlines how the Defence Force and industry can collaboratively enhance New Zealand’s defence capabilities. The strategy aims to build a strong and resilient defence industry that promotes economic growth and expands export markets.

Minister Collins highlighted the benefits of developing cutting-edge drone technology locally, stating that it would reduce supply chain risks and enhance resilience. This hyper-local approach is designed to fortify the NZDF in an increasingly contested global environment.

Conclusion

In the face of evolving threats, the NZDF’s focus on integrating innovative Kiwi products into its operations is a forward-thinking strategy. By investing in local talent and technology, New Zealand is not only enhancing its defence capabilities but also building a foundation for long-term economic resilience.
