Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is leveraging Ukraine’s battlefield innovations as a strategic bargaining tool, particularly by offering the country’s advanced anti-drone systems to Middle Eastern allies. As the war with Russia extends into its fourth year, Zelenskyy is actively seeking air-defense support, aiming to bolster Ukraine’s defenses while simultaneously forming new alliances.

During a recent meeting in Abu Dhabi with United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Zelenskyy explored the possibility of a mutual agreement. This arrangement would see Ukraine providing its state-of-the-art counter-drone technology in exchange for much-needed ballistic missile systems and financial assistance.

In an extensive interview with Fox News following his meeting, Zelenskyy showcased how Ukraine’s military innovations, especially its drone capabilities, have begun to shape defense partnerships on a global scale. “We have, for example, drone interceptors. We have [a] system of electronic warfare and a lot of things. All these jointly work in one system. This is what we have [that] nobody has,” he elaborated, emphasizing the uniqueness of Ukraine’s technological advancements.

Ukraine is poised to share facets of its drone defense system with several Persian Gulf countries, including the UAE, Jordan, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, which are increasingly faced with threats from Iran’s burgeoning drone capabilities. This initiative not only strengthens regional partnerships but also positions Ukraine as a critical player in Middle Eastern defense.

However, Zelenskyy stressed the importance of reciprocity in these partnerships. Ukraine is currently grappling with a significant “big deficit” in critical air defense weapons, particularly the PAC-3 Patriot missiles which are essential for intercepting ballistic threats. “We are ready to help Middle East countries with our expertise and with our knowledge, and we hope … that they can help with anti-ballistic missiles,” he noted, signaling an expectation for mutual support.

In addition to discussions with the UAE, Ukraine has already established 10-year defense agreements with both Saudi Arabia and Qatar. A similar deal with the UAE is anticipated soon, representing an evolving landscape of international defense relations centered around shared security concerns.

Zelenskyy expressed concern about the increasing focus of U.S. military attention on the Middle East amid rising tensions with Iran and the ongoing “Operation Epic Fury.” He warned that this shift could slow down the supply of weapons to Ukraine, which is heavily reliant on international support to sustain its defense against Russian aggression.

Highlighting the interconnectedness of global conflicts, Zelenskyy pointed out that Russia is actively bolstering Iran’s military capabilities by sharing advanced drone technology and battlefield tactics honed during the Ukraine war. “Russia will share all they know about this war. … They’re already sharing with Iranians,” he asserted, underlining the strategic implications of Russia’s cooperation with Iran.

While he refrained from confirming specific missile transfers, Zelenskyy indicated that Russia’s interest in prolonging instability in the Middle East could serve to distract U.S. military efforts from Ukraine. “This is what they do,” he stated, framing the conflict as part of a larger geopolitical game.

On the frontline, Zelenskyy remains adamant that Ukraine will not concede any territory in the contested Donbas region, asserting that doing so would weaken defenses, undermine troop morale, and displace tens of thousands of civilians. “I think their morale will decrease,” he cautioned, reinforcing the importance of maintaining a firm stance amidst ongoing hostilities.

Looking ahead, Zelenskyy appealed to the Trump administration to maintain awareness of Ukraine’s plight while addressing tensions in the Middle East. “I hope that President Trump … will find a way to end this war with pressure on the Iranian regime, and I hope that also they will not forget about … the war of Russia against Ukraine,” he urged, emphasizing that Ukraine’s struggle requires ongoing global attention.

In a grim update, Ukrainian officials reported the impact of continued Russian strikes, with more than 270 drones hitting Ukraine overnight on Friday, resulting in tragic casualties. The ongoing situation underscores the urgency of Ukraine’s calls for international support and highlights the intertwined nature of 21st-century warfare.
