Škoda Auto India’s Strategic Expansion: The Kylaq SUV for Defence Personnel

Mumbai, September 23, 2025 – In a noteworthy move, Czech automaker Škoda Auto India has broadened the availability of its entry-level SUV, the Kylaq, through the Canteen Stores Department (CSD) network. This initiative allows eligible armed forces personnel to purchase the Kylaq at special concessional rates via the Ministry of Defence’s retail channels.

Understanding the CSD Network

The Canteen Stores Department stands as one of India’s most extensive retail networks, specifically catering to the needs of defence personnel. Established to provide subsidised pricing on a range of products, the CSD operates through Unit Run Canteens and an accessible online portal. This network not only enhances the purchasing power of military personnel but also signifies an important collaboration between Škoda and the CSD aimed at making quality vehicles more accessible.

By partnering with the CSD, Škoda Auto India significantly diversifies its sales channels beyond traditional dealerships. This strategic move not only positions the Kylaq as an appealing option for defence personnel but also reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry to tap into niche markets.

The Škoda Kylaq: Features and Specifications

Manufactured in India on Volkswagen Group’s MQB-A0-IN platform, the Kylaq has quickly gained attention for its impressive features. Boasting a five-star safety rating from Bharat NCAP, the SUV is designed to ensure high levels of occupant protection, making it a reliable choice for families and individuals alike. This rating applies to both adult and child occupants, underscoring Škoda’s commitment to safety.

Under the hood, the Kylaq is powered by a capable 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged engine, offering flexibility in transmission options with a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. This versatility caters to a wide audience, allowing potential buyers to choose a configuration that best suits their driving preferences.

Competitive Pricing Through the CSD

Purchasing the Kylaq through the CSD offers a distinct price advantage for defence personnel. For those interested in the base Signature variant with manual transmission, prices start at an attractive ₹8,09,994. Meanwhile, the top-spec Prestige variant, featuring automatic transmission, is available for ₹11,63,417. These prices are ex-showroom, providing considerable savings compared to traditional dealership pricing.

Such competitive pricing reinforces Škoda’s strategy of making premium SUV features accessible to a broader demographic, particularly those who serve the nation.

Future Growth Plans

Škoda Auto India is not resting on its laurels with the Kylaq’s launch. The company has ambitious plans to further expand its reach within the Indian automotive market. Alongside the CSD distribution, Škoda is exploring opportunities in government fleet sales, certified pre-owned markets, and even rural distribution channels.

With the automotive landscape in India continually evolving, these expansions position Škoda to meet the diverse needs of consumers, ensuring sustained growth in this competitive environment.

A Strong Market Presence

Since establishing its footprint in India in 2001, Škoda Auto India has grown its network to over 310 customer touchpoints across 177 cities. Currently, they offer a range of four models: the Kylaq, Slavia, Kushaq, and Kodiaq. This diverse lineup demonstrates Škoda’s commitment to catering to various consumer preferences, effectively reinforcing its brand presence in the Indian automobile sector.

Access for Defence Personnel

Armed forces personnel now have convenient access to purchasing options for the Kylaq through both the CSD’s comprehensive online portal and physical canteen locations nationwide. This accessibility not only simplifies the buying process but also enhances the overall experience for service members looking for a reliable vehicle.

Through these strategic initiatives, Škoda Auto India aims to solidify its reputation as a leader in delivering quality vehicles while enhancing the lives of those who serve the nation, making the Kylaq a key player in the SUV market.
