Trump Says Putin and Zelensky Seek to End the War

On January 22, 2026, former President Donald Trump made a notable statement regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He asserted that both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed a desire to negotiate peace and end the nearly four-year war. Trump conveyed these sentiments following a meeting with Zelensky at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The meeting marked a significant diplomatic moment as both leaders discussed the potential for resolution and peace in the region.

During their interaction, Trump highlighted the urgency of seeking a peace agreement that could potentially reshape the geopolitical landscape. His comments suggest that both parties recognize the human and economic toll of the prolonged conflict and may be ready to explore avenues for de-escalation. The international community is closely monitoring these developments, hopeful that dialogues could lead to a substantive agreement.

Russian Attacks in Southeastern Ukraine

On the same day, fresh violence erupted in southeastern Ukraine, as reported by local officials. Russian forces targeted two regions, resulting in the death of one person and injuring over twenty others. The governor of the Zaporizhzhia region reported multiple strikes on the town of Komyshuvakha, damaging homes and other civilian structures. The attack further fueled tensions, especially as it occurred amidst discussions of peace.

In contrast, the industrial city of Kryvyi Rih, President Zelensky’s hometown, also faced assaults. A combined drone and missile attack injured many, including children. These incidents serve as a grim reminder of the persistent hostilities and the devastating impact on civilians, further complicating the peace negotiations.

Russian Strategic Bombers Patrol the Baltic Sea

Amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts, Russian Tu-22M3 strategic bombers conducted a scheduled patrol over neutral waters of the Baltic Sea. Accompanied by fighter jets such as the Sukhoi Su-35S, this military maneuver illustrates Russia’s ongoing show of strength in the region. The announcement coincided with a Kremlin meeting involving US envoys to discuss the conflict, raising questions about Russia’s intentions amidst negotiations.

Zelensky Chides European Leaders

In a striking critique, Zelensky lashed out at European nations for their slow responses and insufficient spending on defense. He expressed frustration over the lack of action against Russia’s “shadow fleet” of oil tankers that reportedly bypass international sanctions. Zelensky’s comments highlight a growing sentiment that Europe must step up its role in the geopolitical landscape.

Zelensky emphasized that Europe still operates more like a geographical entity than a united political force, underscoring the need for stronger collaborative action in defense matters. His remarks come as Trump’s administration advocates for a peace settlement, which some fear may lead Ukraine to accept unfavorable terms.

New Defense Agreements in Davos

During his time in Davos, Zelensky announced that Ukraine secured agreements on a new air defense package. The president emphasized the importance of these arrangements for protecting his people amidst ongoing threats. His statements reflect a proactive approach to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities and counter the persistent aggressions from Russia.

Upcoming Negotiations in the UAE

Zelensky revealed that Ukrainian negotiators were en route to the United Arab Emirates for discussions with both Russian and US teams. This development signifies a strategic move in diplomatic efforts, where key representatives aim to broker peace in a neutral setting. The outcome of these talks may have significant implications for the future of Ukraine and its relations with both Russia and the United States.

Challenges in Ukraine’s Energy System

Ukraine’s energy system faced its most challenging day since a major blackout in late 2022. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal reported the situation as “extremely difficult,” primarily due to ongoing shelling and damage to critical infrastructure. The precarious energy conditions in Ukraine highlight the broader humanitarian crises stemming from the war, further emphasizing the urgent need for a lasting resolution.

French Interception of Russian Tanker

In a related development, the French navy boarded a Russian tanker in the Mediterranean, suspected of being part of the “ghost fleet” that violates sanctions. French President Macron underscored the commitment to uphold international law. This action reflects France’s proactive stance against efforts to circumvent sanctions and financial support for Russia’s military agenda.

These unfolding events underscore the delicate and volatile nature of international relations in the context of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Each diplomatic maneuver and military action has the potential to shift the balance and shape the future of the region as global leaders grapple with the complex intricacies of peace and security.
