The Significance of Our Service: Reflecting on Military Ethos

Honoring Our Service

At Joint Base Lewis-McChord, a sense of camaraderie and respect flows through the ranks, binding every member of our armed forces—active, retired, reserve, or family member. Each service member carries a unique story, a deep-rooted reason for their commitment, and it’s vital to acknowledge these personal journeys.

As we recently celebrated Armed Forces Day, we find ourselves approaching Memorial Day and Independence Day—three significant occasions that remind us of the sacrifices and achievements of our military. These days don’t just serve as a reminder of the past; they’re an opportunity to reflect on how we serve and contribute to our nation.

The Army Ethic

Central to our mission and identity is a foundational principle: our Army Ethic. This ethic calls back to the very origins of our nation, tracing its roots through the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and various legal frameworks that guide our actions in and out of uniform.

The essence of our Army Ethic lies in our commitment to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, embodying honor, dignity, and respect in all our interactions—not only with fellow service members but also with the civilians we protect.

Building and Maintaining Trust

Trust is the bedrock of our professional identity. The Army Ethic encourages us to continuously demonstrate our character, commitment, and competence. By doing so, we build trust with one another and with the American public we serve. This relationship is crucial; it ensures that our actions align with the highest standards, fostering an environment of mutual respect and understanding.

Our Professional Responsibilities

The Role of Army Professionals

As Army professionals, we are indeed honorable servants of our nation. Our character is paramount: we serve under civilian authority, adhering to the laws of the land while also standing firm against illegal or unethical actions. Integrity is not just a word for us; it’s a way of life, guiding our decisions and interactions both on and off the field.

In every situation, whether in wartime or peacetime, recognizing and respecting the intrinsic dignity of all individuals is vital. This principle shapes our interactions, reinforcing the value of courage, as we lead by example and face uncertainty head-on.

Commitment to Competence

Striving for excellence is a hallmark of our profession. We not only aim to fulfill our duties with discipline but also understand the gravity of our mission—often requiring sacrifices and the courage to make difficult decisions. Lifelong learning is encouraged as it enhances our expertise and prepares us for the responsibilities that lie ahead.

Every soldier and servicemember is expected to contribute to their collective mission, focusing on teamwork and prioritizing the needs of others. This collective spirit fosters a culture of collaboration that is essential to our success.

Stewardship of the Army Profession

As stewards of the Army profession, we are committed to upholding Army values and maintaining accountability for our actions and decisions. Resource management is crucial, necessitating wisdom in how we lead, prepare, and care for our soldiers, Army civilians, and families.

Strengthening the bonds of trust is not merely a responsibility; it’s a commitment to reinforce the essential characteristics of our profession. By aligning our efforts and focusing on collective goals, we nurture a sense of unity that resonates throughout the Army.

Throughout these reflections, it’s clear that our shared commitment and understanding of the Army Ethic play a decisive role in defining who we are as a military family. As we approach meaningful commemorations, let us carry these principles forward in every action, honor our service, and respect the legacy we strive to uphold.
