Increasing Support for Belgian Defense Sector by AWEX

Belgium’s Wallonia region is taking significant strides to bolster its defense industry as the global demand for modern military equipment surges. The Wallonia Export and Investment Agency (AWEX) is ramping up its support for local companies looking to penetrate the defense market, reflecting a vital trend in Europe focused on expanding production capacity amidst rising security concerns.

Strategic Shift in Focus

Pascale Delcomminette, the CEO of AWEX, recently highlighted the agency’s intensified focus on the defense sector during an interview at the BEDEX 2026 defense exhibition. She emphasized AWEX’s commitment to helping Walloon companies navigate international military supply chains. With increasing pressure on European governments to modernize their armed forces, AWEX has taken proactive measures to ensure that local industries can compete on a global scale.

AWEX at BEDEX 2026

The agency’s commitment was on full display at BEDEX 2026, where it coordinated a collective participation of 17 Walloon companies. This initiative showcases the diverse industrial capabilities within Wallonia, with many firms transitioning from civil manufacturing and advanced technology into defense applications. Industry discussions at the exhibition revealed that these companies are actively exploring defense opportunities and are seeking AWEX’s guidance on navigating complex certification requirements and forming partnerships with established defense contractors.

Dual-Use Technology

One of the particularly notable aspects of the Walloon industrial landscape is the dual-use nature of many of its technologies. Companies specializing in precision machining, aerospace components, electronics, and cybersecurity increasingly realize their potential for military applications. AWEX’s role becomes crucial here, acting as a bridge connecting regional firms with international defense primes and facilitating access to government procurement networks.

Opportunities in Defense Aerospace

The defense aerospace sector stands out as a significant opportunity for Walloon companies. With air forces around the globe expanding their fleets, the demand for avionics, sensors, and various components is peaking. Firms with experience in civil aviation supply chains can transition easily into defense aviation programs, exploring avenues such as drone production and aircraft maintenance.

Expanding Ground Combat Systems

In addition to aerospace, ground combat systems present another avenue for growth. NATO allies are ramping up production of armored vehicles, artillery systems, and precision munitions to bolster deterrence capabilities. This surge requires a broad range of industrial contributions, and Walloon manufacturers are well-positioned to supply mechanical assemblies, electronic subsystems, and specialized materials.

Strategic Implications of Strengthening Defense Industry

The implications of enhancing the defense industrial ecosystem in Wallonia extend beyond mere economic development. The ongoing war in Ukraine has underscored the need for supply chain resilience to sustain high-intensity military operations. By integrating regional suppliers into the defense manufacturing base, AWEX aims not only to expand production capacity but also to secure supply lines across NATO and Europe.

Support Initiatives by AWEX

AWEX’s support extends to organizing international trade missions, facilitating industrial matchmaking, and assisting with compliance on export regulations and military certifications. Such services are particularly vital for small and medium-sized enterprises, which often possess specialized technical expertise but lack familiarity with the intricacies of defense procurement.

Alignment with European Policies

AWEX’s initiatives align with broader European objectives aimed at strengthening the continent’s defense and industrial capabilities. Funded programs from the European Defence Fund foster cross-border collaboration, encouraging regional participation in multinational capability projects. Successful adaptation by Walloon companies not only opens doors to domestic contracts but also positions them as vital contributors to future European defense initiatives.

Growing Interest in the Defense Sector

The notable presence of regional industries at BEDEX 2026 speaks volumes about the growing allure of the defense sector within Wallonia’s industrial ecosystem. As global defense markets expand and military modernization accelerates, Wallonia is poised to emerge as an increasingly vital player in Europe’s defense supply network, providing local companies with unprecedented access to a technologically advanced and strategically crucial industry.
