Second International Expo Highlights Innovations in Unmanned Maritime Technologies
The second-ever Pakistan International Maritime Expo and Conference (PIMEC), which kicked off on Monday at the Expo Centre in Karachi, showcases an impressive array of innovations in maritime technology. From unmanned sea vessels to cutting-edge aquaculture solutions, this four-day event is a testament to Pakistan’s growing potential in the maritime sector.
A Nation’s Maritime Potential
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, during the expo’s inauguration, emphasized the geographic advantages of Pakistan as a “natural maritime bridge” connecting the East and West. Yet, he pointed out that the maritime sector’s contribution to Pakistan’s GDP remains disappointingly low at less than 1%. Echoing this sentiment, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf remarked on the enormous maritime potential of the nation and its direct link to economic prosperity.
Innovations on Display
Stingray Technologies
Among the notable exhibitors, Stingray Technologies stands out with its advancements in unmanned surface vessels (USVs). These technologically sophisticated crafts can conduct reconnaissance missions and possess offensive capabilities. The 25-foot USV can operate at a distance of 20-30 kilometers for four to five hours. Also showcased was a maritime logistics drone designed for small-scale replenishments and an integrated ship management system to enhance operational efficiency. A VR ship-training program is in the works, promising a more immersive training experience for future maritime professionals.
National Electronics Complex of Pakistan (NECOP)
The National Electronics Complex of Pakistan (NECOP) unveiled the SAFRAH drone jamming gun, an indigenously designed solution aimed at combating the escalating threat of weaponized commercial drones. With an effective operational range of 1.5 kilometers and capable of disabling drone communications, it provides a critical safeguard for safety and security. Technical demonstrations are scheduled to allow attendees to see how this innovative solution works in real-time.
Woot Tech and Winged Innovative Solutions (WIS)
Woot Tech is making waves with its line of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), including fixed-wing and multi-rotor drones equipped for various missions such as surveillance and target operations. They showcased a giant remote-controlled drone and USV capable of reconnaissance or carrying munitions. In parallel, Winged Innovative Solutions, a company also engaged in UAS, presented advanced loitering munitions and VTOL UAVs aimed at both industrial and defense applications, demonstrating Pakistan’s capacities in advanced aerial technology.
Baykee’s Underwater Innovations
The Pakistani branch of Baykee, known for its power equipment, showcased an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) designed for deep-sea repairs. This UUV represents significant advancements in underwater technology, meeting the growing needs of maritime industries. They also presented a portable radar jammer system, further diversifying their offerings for military applications.
The Emerging Aquaculture Sector
The expo wasn’t limited to technological innovations; it also spotlighted sustainable practices in aquaculture. Zarwah Enterprises, led by CEO Minahil Yousaf, is making strides as Pakistan’s first female-led aquaculture company. They provide a range of services aimed at promoting sustainable fish farming, including biosecurity solutions and pond construction. Alongside them, AquaTech Fisheries is innovating with systems like Biofloc and Aquaponics, enhancing efficiency in fish feed and sustainable farming practices.
Local and International Collaboration
The expo serves as a platform not only for local innovations but also for fostering international cooperation. Over 150 local exhibitors and 28 international companies attended, with representatives from 45 countries, including key officials from Saudi Arabia. This collaboration is crucial for sharing knowledge and resources, creating pathways for improved maritime capabilities.
The Road Ahead
While this exposition showcases a small selection of avant-garde companies, the trajectory is clear: Pakistan’s maritime sector exhibits promising growth. Innovations presented at PIMEC illustrate not only local capacity but also the potential to address global market demands. As the country explores and develops its maritime capabilities, only time will determine the lasting impacts of these technologies on the national economic landscape.
