On December 2nd, 2025, a landmark event unfolded in the realm of defense and aerospace as ICEYE, a leading player in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite operations, announced a significant partnership with the Portuguese Air Force (Força Aérea Portuguesa). This partnership culminated in the signing of a contract for the direct procurement of a SAR satellite. This development holds historical importance not just for the Air Force but also for Portugal’s national security and ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) capabilities in space.

The agreement signifies a substantial advancement in the Portuguese Air Force’s capabilities, allowing it to directly control its satellite assets for the first time in history. ICEYE is set to deliver a cutting-edge SAR satellite equipped with state-of-the-art technology that ensures reliable performance under a variety of conditions. Unique in its ability to provide day-and-night imaging, this technology allows for persistent surveillance and efficient operational planning, making it an invaluable asset for national security initiatives.

This satellite acquisition is poised to enhance multiple facets of Portugal’s military operations, including surveillance precision and situational awareness. By shifting from reliance on third-party satellite data to direct ownership, the Portuguese Air Force can respond more quickly to emerging threats and challenges. This control extends beyond military operations, providing the capability for environmental monitoring and supporting maritime security initiatives to protect Portugal’s Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ) and its invaluable natural resources.

In a statement reflecting on this transformative agreement, Jordi Laguarda, VP Missions Spain and Portugal at ICEYE, emphasized the significance of strengthening Portugal’s sovereign space capabilities. He noted, “This agreement represents a major step forward in strengthening Portugal’s sovereign space capabilities and demonstrates the Air Force’s commitment to innovation and operational excellence. We are proud to support the Portuguese Air Force as they advance their mission in the new space domain.”

General João Cartaxo Alves, Chief of Staff of the Portuguese Air Force, echoed this sentiment, declaring this moment a historic one that elevates the Air Force into a new operational frontier. He remarked, “By acquiring its own capabilities to operate in space, the Air Force enters a new dimension, where Space has replaced the sky as the new operational frontier. This technological innovation strengthens the autonomous capacity of the Air Force to ensure permanent surveillance of the national territory – on land, at sea, and in the air – under any weather conditions.”

This satellite acquisition marks a pivotal milestone, and it adds to Portugal’s broader aspirations in advanced space and defense capabilities. Previously, the Portuguese Air Force operated a satellite acquired through a collaboration with CTI Aeroespacial, which signed a separate agreement with ICEYE just six months earlier, indicating an aggressive acceleration in the country’s investment in space technology.

In essence, this monumental step not only amplifies the Portuguese Air Force’s operational readiness but also contributes to the nation’s strategic defense framework, showcasing Portugal’s commitment to leveraging innovative technologies for enhanced national security and environmental stewardship.
