Saudi Arabia’s Military Ambitions Take Center Stage at World Defense Show 2026

Saudi Arabia marked a significant milestone in its defense strategy on February 9, 2026, during the World Defense Show held in Riyadh. Under the patronage of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Minister of Defense Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz formally inaugurated two new entities under Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) and opened a state-of-the-art land industrial complex. This ambitious initiative underscores the Kingdom’s efforts to localize defense production, diminish reliance on foreign suppliers, and broaden its influence in the global defense market.

Unveiling of New SAMI Entities

The launch of the SAMI Land Company and the SAMI Autonomous Company marks a strategic shift towards a more specialized organizational framework within SAMI. The SAMI Land Company aims to centralize operations related to land systems, encompassing manufacturing, systems integration, and lifecycle support. This subsidiary is designed to bolster national capabilities and readiness of Saudi Arabia’s Armed Forces by focusing on locally produced and integrated systems.

Conversely, the SAMI Autonomous Company has emerged to harness national expertise in autonomous and unmanned systems. It targets an array of technologies, including unmanned aerial vehicles and ground platforms, intending to consolidate capabilities across the complete value chain, from initial design to operational support. This realignment resonates with global military trends emphasizing autonomous technologies, ensuring the Kingdom retains control over its defense assets.

Launch of the SAMI Land Industrial Complex

Accompanying the new SAMI entities was the inauguration of the SAMI Land Industrial Complex, touted as the largest fully integrated land manufacturing facility in the Middle East and North Africa. Spanning 82,000 square meters within a comprehensive industrial area of one million square meters, the complex leverages cutting-edge Industry 4.0 technologies, such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, to enhance operational efficiency, product quality, and process control.

Designed to be a national hub for manufacturing, technology transfer, and workforce training, the facility is projected to create over 1,000 skilled jobs for Saudi citizens. It will focus on the manufacture, testing, and maintenance of both wheeled and tracked armored vehicles, with an annual production capacity of up to 1,500 military vehicles. By establishing this complex, Saudi Arabia aims to reduce its reliance on international suppliers while fostering an industrial base that aligns with global standards.

Introduction of the HEET Vehicle Line

As part of this expansive initiative, SAMI also introduced the HEET program, a new family of wheeled armored vehicles available in 4×4, 6×6, and 8×8 configurations. Crafted and produced within Saudi Arabia, these vehicles are tailored for contemporary security and defense missions. They promise high mobility, ballistic resilience, and modular adaptability, making them suitable for a variety of operational environments including urban and desert terrains.

The HEET vehicles are notably designed for rapid deployment, and their flexible architectures allow for the incorporation of advanced command and control systems, as well as configurations that can be manned or operated autonomously. The development of such systems is aligned with the operational demands of the Saudi land forces and emphasizes fully localized production capabilities.

The RUKN Local Content Program

SAMI’s commitment to fostering local capabilities goes further with the introduction of its Local Content Program, RUKN. This initiative is designed to create a robust national supply chain by identifying critical dependencies, mapping strategic value chains, and catalyzing local capacity development. The program has two primary objectives: enhancing local production and reducing reliance on outside suppliers through a cohesive industrial ecosystem.

RUKN deploys digital tools, incentive mechanisms, and targeted investments to support long-term defense sustainability and operational readiness. This comprehensive approach is set to transform the defense landscape in Saudi Arabia, reinforcing the Kingdom’s self-sufficiency in military capabilities.

SAMI’s Forward-Looking Vision

Thamer AlMuhid, SAMI Group’s Chief Executive Officer, articulated that these initiatives reflect an integrated model centered on technology localization, operational readiness, and the cultivation of sustainable sovereign capabilities. This expansion not only enriches national industrial capacity but also enhances the skill sets of the domestic workforce.

As the National Strategic Partner of the World Defense Show for the third consecutive year, SAMI positions itself as a pivotal entity in Saudi Arabia’s defense industrial framework. This alignment with Vision 2030 highlights the Kingdom’s ambition to foster a robust defense industrial base that holds significance both regionally and internationally. By investing heavily in defense capabilities and self-reliance, Saudi Arabia is redefining its role on the global stage, setting a formidable precedent for future military innovations.
