Trump Invites Putin to ‘Board of Peace’ and Threatens Tariffs on French Wine

In a striking announcement on January 20, 2026, former President Donald Trump stated that he has extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to join a proposed “Board of Peace.” This unexpected move, suggested during a speech in Davos, Switzerland, follows high-profile tensions between the United States and Russia amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.

The ‘Board of Peace’

Trump’s concept of the “Board of Peace” aims to facilitate dialogue and de-escalate conflicts among nations. During his remarks, he suggested that an inclusive advisory group, featuring leaders from multiple countries, could pave the way for diplomatic resolutions in an increasingly tumultuous world. The invitation to Putin has raised eyebrows, given the backdrop of international sanctions and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Tariffs on French Wine Over Macron’s Stance

Adding fuel to the fire, Trump also threatened to impose a staggering 200% tariff on French wine. This threat appears to be a direct response to comments made by French President Emmanuel Macron. The friction between the two leaders has been palpable, particularly regarding their divergent views on foreign policy and economic sanctions related to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In the competitive world of trade, such tariff threats have immediate implications for the wine industry and ongoing U.S.-France relations.

Davos Summit: A Gathering of Global Leaders

The backdrop for these statements is the World Economic Forum in Davos, where nearly 400 political leaders, including over 60 heads of state, gathered to discuss pressing global issues. Apart from Trump, notable attendees include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, and French President Macron. However, not all high-profile leaders are present, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is notably absent due to ongoing security concerns in his home country.

Ukrainian Negotiations at Davos

While Zelensky hasn’t made it to Davos, Ukrainian negotiators are actively engaged in discussions with national security advisers from France, Germany, and the UK. Rustem Umerov, Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council Secretary, confirmed these meetings have been focused on security guarantees, economic development, and Ukraine’s recovery in light of the continuing war with Russia.

The Uncertainty of Zelensky’s Attendance

Zelensky’s potential attendance at Davos has been increasingly uncertain. He indicated that any journey to Switzerland would depend on securing a bilateral meeting with Trump, reflecting the geopolitical importance he places on U.S. engagement. His priority remains in Kyiv, especially given recent Russian bombardments.

Russian Engagement at Davos

Meanwhile, Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev is also in Davos, holding discussions with international leaders. Dmitriev is a significant figure in exploring potential business opportunities and seeking an end to the war in Ukraine. His presence signals ongoing dialogue, even amidst heightened tensions.

Remembering the Defenders of Donetsk Airport

Amid these political developments, Zelensky also took a moment to honor the defenders of Donetsk Airport, commemorating their bravery during a prolonged siege in 2015. Known as “Cyborgs,” these soldiers exemplified resilience and courage, attributes that Zelensky believes continue to inspire the Ukrainian nation’s defense against aggression.

Economic Ramifications: A Moscow Court Decision

On the economic front, a Moscow court recently dismissed an attempt by Russian prosecutors to seize the assets of NCH Capital, a U.S. private equity fund. This ruling is forthcoming as U.S. and Russian representatives prepare for discussions in Davos. Given the complexities of foreign investments in Russia since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, this case reflects broader economic tensions between the two nations.

Weathering the Storm: Snow Apocalypse in Russia

While geopolitical events unfold in Davos, Russia faces its own natural calamity, dubbed a “snow apocalypse.” Record-breaking snowfall is burying towns across the country, adding yet another layer of complexity to government responses and public safety amid a chaotic winter season.

As discussions continue in Davos, these multi-faceted issues illustrate the intricate web of international relations, trade, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, keeping global attention firmly fixed on these pivotal developments.
